Born on March 2, 1919, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jones was raised in a wealthy family and had a privileged childhood. She attended private schools and even studied at the prestigious Northwestern University before dropping out to pursue a career in acting. She made her debut in the film industry in 1939 with the film “New Frontier” but only gained recognition in 1943 with her performance in “The Song of Bernadette,” which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

After her successful debut, Jones went on to star in several critically acclaimed films such as “Duel in the Sun” (1946), “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” (1955), and “The Towering Inferno” (1974). Despite her successful acting career, Jones had a troubled personal life. She was married three times and had several affairs throughout her life. She was also rumored to have been involved in a secret affair with the married producer David O. Selznick during the production of “Gone with the Wind.”

Jones’ personal struggles also affected her career, and she took several hiatuses from acting to deal with her mental health issues. She suffered from severe depression and was even admitted to a mental institution in 1967. Her struggles with addiction also led to her being in and out of rehab facilities throughout her life.

In 1951, she was investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee for her alleged involvement with communist sympathizers. Although she denied any involvement, the controversy tarnished her image in Hollywood.

Despite her struggles, Jones continued to act in films until the 1970s, when she decided to retire from acting. She spent her later years living a quiet life away from the public eye. She passed away on December 17, 2009, at the age of 90.
