Look, there are many ways of making it and of course the process is not as cumbersome as it used to be in the past. Growing accessibility to latest technology like camera and editing software has made the process much easier. Even you can be more experimental with it than think. However, the basics of making a cinematic video are still same.
To make a musical film, arranging for the music is a must. Without music, there may be a video but not a music video in the world. No need to worry, if you have not been able to convince a band to get them a musical video done. You can still buy copywrites of a music available online on many platforms. If you don’t want to pay, just go for a no copywrite music by giving them a credit or even without giving any credit as prescribed.
1. Plan music video creatively
So, after finalising music, start working on the concept that is already in your mind, and that goes in line with the selected music. It can be a creative storyline or just an abstract. Write your idea in mind on a pad and make a simple storyboard. Now, decide on shooting of your video. Do you want to go to some real nature locations? Or do you want to shoot in your studio with glamorous lights and chroma key?
2. Shoot your concept
If you don’t have artists or working on zero budget or want to star in the musical video, you can shoot it alone. Just bring your camera or smartphone and take some cinematic shots of yourself or your model in combination of close shots, mid shots and long shots. However, keep it simple with your shots. You don’t have to be too experimental. Take stable shots and don’t go with excessive zooming.
3. Edit your footage
At the editing table, just arrange those shots according to your concept or storyline. Further, put some special effects and add music to your footage. Don’t use excessive extra effects or transitions as by doing this you can lose the real feel of the sequence. You can add some sound affects too like raining or fire sound effects as required. Your video is ready to be exported from the software.
