1. Let it be shaky

First is let it be shaky. Don’t take stable shots and don’t care too much of its stabilization while taking your shots. A vintage film look is really shaky and you can also make it shaky through after-effects at editing table. And also, you don’t need any of stabilization tools to make it stabilized because you want it to be shaky.

There is no need to shoot in 24 fps, which is required for cinematic look. Instead, 15-20 fps will work for vintage look. You can increase your 24-fps-shot speed up to 105% while editing to get the required frame rates.

2. Mostly close-ups

The second hack is mostly shoot closer looks. Unlike a cinematic film look, you don’t have to compile those long shots, mid shots and close-ups for your Vintage look. Mostly, you have to take some weird zoom in and zoom out shots.

Remember, in those days, what they did, mostly they shot close-ups, like laughing and just shouting and fighting and all, and then zoomed out suddenly. While taking wide shots, they used to zoom in unexpectedly.

3. Vintage film look after-effects

The third hack is use after effects. Convert your 16:9-footage to 8, 16, 35 or 65 film look by formatting it to 1.33:1, 1.66:1, 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 aspect ratio, respectively. Also at the editing table use some old stock after effects. There are some presets, which you can use to make an old stock film look.

If you see those old clips, you must have seen noises and grains. Because you are also telling your story like this was about some happy old days and all that, so, you have to make it like old footage. Through these after-effect tools, you can make it similar like old-age footage or old stock.
