A look at the history of civilization, and we know the world has so far faced a number of disasters – natural and human-made. From the most devastating tropical cyclones, tsunamis, forest fires, volcanoes, earthquakes, epidemics and pandemics to two world wars, this earth has survived a lot. The First World War during 1911-1914 was not enough that we had to face another during 1939-1945. And it was the end of Second World War, when we felt need of an international humanitarian organization to avoid such disasters in future.

Consequently, the United Nations was established on October 24, 1945, and we started celebrating the UN day since 1948 every year. In all these years and decades, this international body has worked on a number of humanitarian goals around the globe. It aimed at making people aware, eradicating poverty, illiteracy and unemployment, providing education and medication, and spreading humanity. We have moved ahead a lot since the devastation of the two world wars. But this deadly coronavirus pandemic came, and mitigated efforts of decades. And life had to see the dark phase once again in 2020.

UN’s mission more important than ever

Now at this moment of crisis, the need of such an organization like UN is felt to be enormous. In line with this fact, UN is also playing its part with all available resources in almost every country. The UN’s mission is more important than ever, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, celebrating 75 years of its establishment. Referring to United Nations as a symbol of global unity at its birth, the UN chief said, the organization becomes an epicenter now. The Geneva-headquartered organization head emphasized on the enduring power of its founding document and the significance of multilateralism.

It’s only by joining heads, the world can achieve its big goals like conflict prevention, sustainable development promotion, human rights upholding and planet protection, said Guterres. He highlighted need of international cooperation, calling it the only way to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic. Only by this way of global collaboration, we can overcome climate emergency, growing inequality and spread of hatred, he said. UN looks towards fighting Covid-19 through response and recovery efforts guided by Agenda 2030, based on global solidarity and cooperation.

While year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, responsibilities of the organization have also become larger. The world is facing huge life disruption and immense global health crisis presented by Covid-19 outbreak. The economic and social impacts of the pandemic are also huge, with speculations that mitigation will take decades. UN has taken responsibility to remind the world that no positive change and transformation is possible without an international cooperation.

The UN colleagues work around the world and around the clock for a safer, healthier, and more just world for everyone, said UN chief. He expressed enormous proud to work alongside the organization people “on #UNDay and every day”. On 75th anniversary of UN, he repeated that the founding mission of the organization has become more critical than ever. The UN head asked the world to come together and realize the shared vision to build a better world filled with peace and dignity for all its citizens.
