Syria conflict current situation
After 10-year long conflict and civil war, Syrians are forced to face a range of critical challenges in daily lives. Among the population, women have been most vulnerable so far. They have to face more incidents of sexual and gender-based violence, early and forced marriages and trafficking. However, amid all this chaos, it’s woman who is taking the driving seat of their lives in the conflict-hit country.
Syria conflict current situation and women
During a long-time violence, terrorism, displacement, instability, destitution, a number of men have been killed and injured. So, women have become leaders of their households, says United Nations Special Envoy Geir O Pedersen at a video conference. He cited Syrian Women’s Advisory Board‘s first meeting this year to point views of women of Syria about their country.
What Syrian women want: Will they lead?
A number of Syrian women expressed their wish for a renewed political process, lasting peace and a new constitution. They want a constitution that offers rights and freedoms to all in the country, Pedersen pointed. They are hoping for a sustainable calm where women have a meaningful participation. Also, what they want to see in the core is women’s safety, fulfillment of basic needs, dignity, rights and equality.
Conflict civil war continues in Syria
The era of conflict is still not over in Syria. In late April, military operations in Syria’s east Ghouta had claimed 30 lives, including women and children. According to reports, fighting and shelling between East Ghouta and Damascus had continued in both directions for a long time. And this one is not the only incident that shows the horrible present situation in the country.
Earlier in February, UN’s independent rights experts stated that there were an unknown number of foreign nationals who have died when they were detained in squalid camps in Syria’s northeast. Raising concerns over wives and children of the extremists detained in these camps UN experts have urged 57 countries to repatriate their nationals immediately.
Later in the same month, a deadly fire occurred at Syria’s largest Al-Hol refugee camp. That killed at least three children, and injured other 15 children and 11 adults. Following that UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urged all the countries to repatriate and safely reintegrate their children and internally-displaced people.
The said camp has been housing families of alleged extremist fighters since the defeat of ISIL in Syria and Iraq. Along with many thousands of Syrian children, over 22,000 foreign children of at least 60 extremists stay in the camp. Amid the crisis that does not seem to end soon, new hopes and wars continue to conquer grounds every day. Lets see who wins and who loses the battle and when.
