Film yourself

What was I saying? Yeah. How to shoot yourself? Many times, it happens when we want to take some b-rolls of ourselves or we want to take some shots of ourselves. But we don’t have anybody to shoot us. That time, it is important we know how to shoot ourselves.

Mix different shorts

So, this is all we have is a smartphone camera, and this camera mode is much better than many of other cameras. What I do actually while filming myself! I divide the whole project of shooting into three parts when I shoot myself – close shots, mid shorts and long shots. Actually, in a cinematic video, it is important to combine at least three types of these shots to get a cinematic look.

Let’s begin with the first point. Your close ups. So, we all have these smartphones right now and they have this selfie mode, you know, a front camera. So, click your front camera on and take some close ups.

Close shots

Now you have to keep the camera around your face and just take some shots. You can also do it with your rear camera, but it will be difficult for you to know, how it’s going on. Actually with front camera, you can see yourself and fake it you are not seeing or you are not looking into the camera, and you are not shooting yourself.

Mid shots

And the second point is mid shots. For taking your mid shots, don’t keep your camera so close of yourself, but a little far from yourself. And you can take a few shots of your mid part.

Long shots

Next point is long shots and we can do it in real camera. But it is a little tricky. You cannot take your camera in hand and take your long shot. Actually, to take your long shot, you can fix on your camera somewhere. You can fix your camera on a tripod, by a wall, by a pole or a tree or anywhere. Just keep in mind that you have to see yourself in the shot.

Block the scene

In filmmaking, blocking a scene is important. To block the scene, you have to go from this tree to that one, or this poll to that poll, or from this stone to that stone only. So that you cannot go out of the frame because if you cross that limit, then you will be out of the frame and your camera will not be able to capture you. There is nobody to shoot, and your camera cannot move itself. So, you just have to move in those 50 or 100 yards, so that the camera can capture you.

You have to take three types of shots – close-ups, mid shots and long shots and then compile it to make it a cinematic video. So that’s all about that.
